本书为面向来华留学生的大文科专业预科教育教材，旨在通过一个学期的教学为学生架起普通汉语学习通向文科专业汉语学习的桥梁，为预科生进入本科文科专业学习奠定必要的语言和知识基础。本书包含上、下两个分册，其中，上册8个单元，下册7个单元。基于对来华学历留学生专业选择情况的充分调查，本书15个单元的话题分布情况为：汉语言文学4课；法律3课；历史哲学3课；国际关系与中国外交2课；艺术1课；教育1课；新闻1课。在内容设置上，每课通过3篇课文及相关的有针对性的练习全面培养学生听、说、读、写、译、查的能力。其中，课文1为一般性通俗文章，具有一定的启发性和讨论性，旨在引入专业知识的学习；课文2为核心模块，强调专业性，为专业基础性文章，在话题上与课文1相呼应；课文3为扩展阅读，旨在供学有余力的学习者从专业的角度进行相关性与延伸性阅读。
